Have You Had A Concussion? New Study Shows the Potential Health Risks

Scientists at the University of Southern California and University of San Francisco reported that patients who have experienced concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBI) could benefit from subsequent visits to healthcare professionals. The studies report that 4 million people experience traumatic brain injuries such as a concussion but only 2 out of 5 individuals seek the proper medical care within three months.

Because concussions are being treated more like minor injuries, many healthcare professionals are unaware that TBIs are connected to other brain disorders. They are discharging patients without giving them the proper knowledge around the warning signs of continued effects of TBIs. Medical professionals that are discharging patients with lingering concussions are putting those patients at risk of more severe traumatic brain injuries. Doctors should be vigilant against about watching for signs of continuing symptoms. Those doctors that are not taking extra care of their patients with TBIs could find themselves in a medical malpractice lawsuit.

The studies show that it is important for those who have had a concussion to see a specialist to follow up on any continuing symptoms. The study shows only 15 percent of patients have followed up with a healthcare professional specializing in traumatic brain injuries. The studies also show that these continuing symptoms correlate with dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

What to Look Out for After a Concussion

Post-concussion syndrome is a set of symptoms that can persist long after a concussion. After receiving medical attention for an initial concussion, keep a watch out for these symptoms.

  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Memory issues
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue

If any of these symptoms persist, seek medical attention.

"In over 25 years of practice on the defense side of malpractice cases, Jeff Mitchell is the attorney I fear most. He takes very good cases. Jeff has the medicine and the applicable literature down cold. He is without a doubt the best cross-examiner I have ever seen. I have paid his clients a lot of money over the years."
